Every mother's Day weekend, the Audubon birds of prey by our house hosts a baby owl shower. If you bring a gift from their registry, you have free entrance. What makes the baby owl shower so special Is that many of the birds are on display. Our favorite bird is Sanford. The Eastern screech owl. He's at the center because he's missing an eye.
This year, we figured out that we live on the Eastern side of the country and should be able to see these birds in the wild. So we asked what we needed to do.
We got Screech Owl Nest Box plans from the Audubon website. Then we hung a few near our house and a few at the grandparents’ house in the woods.

We did a few things differently than the plans recommend:
- We glued it together and then nailed it instead of screwing the boards in place.
- We used pine, coated with tung oil
- We cut the angle of BOTH ends of the roof

We primed the inside of the boxes with pinestraw.
