It took us two trips to complete the badges in this state. That’s what happens when you get further from home! Choosing your dates of visit makes or breaks the experience based on weather. We loved the “Mosquito Meter” at Congaree and expect it’s for real! There’s great learning from the Revolutionary War and the Civil War in this state, wonderful for augmenting your history lesson!

Charles Pinckney

Keep an eye on the schedule for this park. It ended up being closed when we visited. It’s a lovely park to walk around, so all was not lost. Great picnic tables if you go around lunchtime. Some of the answers in the book were easy to find as we walked around. You can contact for booklet.

Congaree

Fantastic site. Words cannot describe. Spring is best. A little crowded, but so many birds! There’s a bird bingo in addition to the booklet that lets you get a fantastic-cute sticker. We even saw an owl in the middle of the day!

They were out of booklets when we arrived. Another reason to print ahead here. Activities include bingo, reading a section and answering questions about the native tribes original to the land, and a timeline. We actually completed the book 3 years before we got to go. It was on our list for a long time. Worth the wait.

Cowpens

Sometimes battle sites run together. This one is Revolutionary War. There was a lovely walk, but you can also drive the perimeter (we had grandparents along). Small museum. Pretty explanatory video required, naturally some graphic. It was a war! Some questions include listening to little telephones around the museum that have people acting out parts from the time period.

This is also a location where you can get the Southern Campaign Badge. Contact for booklet. You basically need to earn stamps at the locations.

Ft. Moultrie

Contact for booklet. Sometimes listed together, it’s really two locations, two booklets, two badges.

The booklet lets you pretend to be a ranger, draw a family tree, label a map of the fort, do a maze and label the appropriate participants.

Ft. Sumter

Contact for booklet. Sometimes listed together, it’s really two locations, two booklets, two badges. Requires a ferry to visit!

There’s a bingo, questions from the visitor’s center, a fill in the blank, a space to label important dates, and a page to label parts of the fort.

King’s Mountain

Contact for booklet. Currently they are mailing them as the online version is outdated. There are a number of questions about the plaques on the hike around the battlefield and about the museum. We found the museum to be quite well done. It’s definitely one that requires more effort, but the rangers are very helpful and the hike was lovely in the spring. Be prepared for the elevation change!

Ninety-Six

Special star-shaped badge like the fort. Contact for a simple booklet. Draw something inside the log cabin. Bingo. Answer some questions about what you find in the small museum. We didn’t know until it was too late, if you do two extra activities, you get a star-shaped patch.

The video is required, but it’s a little graphic. Hey, it was war! Proceed cautiously.

Overmountain Victory

Print the booklet here and collect your badge at Cowpens or Kings Mountain. My kids enjoyed finding the Tories with evergreen in their hats. There’s also the favored hidden pictures and a slightly more challenging two pages of math. Very quick and simple.

Southern Campaign

Part of a number of locations not just in South Carolina–Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse, Kings Mountain, Ninety Six. Print here.

Reconstruction Era

Contact for booklet. At the time we did ours, it was a very simple front and back page. You can draw a picture of an important building, do a maze and word search, and learn about amendments 13-15. The museum is small, but there is a quick walking tour to a couple main points in town,

Enjoy your super educational trip!
